Print A3 on A4 paper

Have an A3 exam, poster, or worksheet but only an A4 printer? SmartPrint tiles images and PDF pages automatically so you can print and tape them back together.

When A3-on-A4 tiling makes sense

Schools and offices in many countries standardize on A4 printers, but worksheets, exams, and posters often arrive as A3 PDFs or scans. Shrinking the whole page to fit one A4 sheet makes text unreadable.

Tiling keeps the original scale: SmartPrint calculates how many A4 sheets you need, adds overlap for trimming, and labels each tile so assembly is straightforward.

Sheet count and layout

An A3 landscape page typically splits into 2×2 A4 tiles (four sheets). Portrait A3 may use a 2×1 or 1×2 grid depending on your printer margins.

Preview the grid before exporting. If your printer trims edges, increase overlap by a few millimeters so joins stay invisible after taping.

Key points

  • Works with PDFs and high-resolution images
  • Optimal A4 portrait or landscape tile layout
  • Overlap and cut marks for clean assembly
  • Files never leave your browser

Step by step

  1. Upload an A3 PDF page or image in the SmartPrint editor.
  2. Set target paper to A4 and review the suggested rows and columns.
  3. Enable overlap and cut marks if you will trim seamless joins.
  4. Export the tiled PDF and print every page at actual size / 100%.
  5. Assemble sheets using the row and column labels.

Pro tips

  • Print a single test tile first to confirm margins before running the full job.
  • Use matte tape on the back of sheets so the front stays clean for classroom display.
  • Export at 100% scale — never “Fit to page” — or tiles will not align.

Common questions

Can I print A3 PDFs that have multiple pages?

Yes. Pick the page you want to tile in the editor, then choose A4 as target paper and adjust rows and columns.

Do I need an A3 printer at all?

No. SmartPrint is built for A4-only home and office printers. You print tiles and assemble the poster manually.
